My communication Assessment
I asked my daughter and my ex-husband to participate in this activity. I was very surprised with their responses. In regards for me in having any anxiety my daughter believed I had all the confidence of the world, while my ex-husband agreed about my anxiety about speaking in public. I asked them why they answered the way they did. My daughter shared that since I love being a teacher I have to feel comfortable being around so many different families and children; how can I feel anxious.
My ex-husband remembered the day I was maid of honor at a friends wedding and how much my voice cracked and my hands shook as I gave my speech. In truth I do not get nervous in class, or speaking with parents, but standing in front of people my knees knock.
I loved looking at their response and compare. It is actually interesting how people even in you own family can look at you completely differently. Our perception of how we communicate with others is an active process of selecting, organizing, and interpreting people, objects, events, situations, and activities.

Communicating with children I remind myself that all
cultures are equal. I know that the way I was raised is the culture that I am
most comfortable with, but I know that it is not only way or the best way.
I stay clear of assuming that certain cultures
all share the same beliefs, opinions or views. Everyone is treated and
individuals.
Being sensitive of Non-verbal communication such as facial
expressions, body language and voice is important due to the fact that all
cultures have different interpretations of them.

Exploring Non Verbal Communication
I decided to watch "The Big Bang Theory", I often hear my daughters talk about it so I thought it may be interesting.
There are 5 characters in this show 4 males and one female. There is one character that I noticed that when he speaks the other characters seem to look annoyed. One rolls his eyes, another covers his face, the other two just have a blank stare and shook their heads. He did not even notice how the others look at him, he just continued to speak and smile or chuckle afterward. They all seem comfortable around each other until they are around women. They look scared to death and they argued back and forth pointing and pushing one another.
They work together in the same place and spend a lot of time in a comic book store.
The characters seem to enjoy each others company and they eat a lot of what I think is Chinese take out, in the living room. In this episode the tall male character stands over another as to move out of my spot. He seems to be territorial on top of being full of himself. There is a romance going on with two characters, she seems to be the one in control because she smiles and he just follows.
Watching the show over again, I noticed that I was right about one of the main characters Sheldon. He is extremely intelligent and he knows it. He is sarcastic with the others but the others just shrug it off with a comment or two. They show that they do care for each other with sarcasm and derogatory remarks.
I was happy that I was able to understand the body language from this show, (and actually enjoyed it).
I realized when people speak, language is not only left to the emission of words. In order to get their point across a great deal of meaning is conveyed using gestures whether it is intended or not. Listening to people speak they become animated during their conversations. Non-verbal expression can be extremely emotional or powerful because of it's persuasive impact it has on others.

Competent Communication
Verbal language, body language, tone, deliverance, opinions, ideas, these are ways that describe how powerful communicating with others mean. How many people have walked in and out of our lives and left an impression that we carry with us? I sat and thought of so many people who made me think, cry, wonder and even get angry.
I wanted to share with everyone that we all as students have come across in our journey towards our goal of continuing with our education. Recently in one of our courses we all came across a media segment required in our course, I chose Dr. Eugene Garcia . Why did I chose him? I never met him, never knew he truly existed until just recently. But, listening to him speak about his experiences and humble beginnings had me looking at myself .
I found this video of him speaking at a graduation and spoke just as he did in the media we all were required to view. I remember listening and just nodding to everything he said. Much of my educational success really didn't come from a book, school or my teachers. He reminded me that my teachers were my parents, my family the people in my neighborhood that all contributed in creating this person that I look at in the mirror everyday while I wash my face, brush my teeth and put on makeup. He communicated to me how my experiences helped in understanding and appreciating my academic education all the more. What is so interesting is that even though this form of communication was one sided his views, thoughts and opinions brought me back to my childhood. I found myself thinking, laughing and fighting off a tear or two. It was so interesting for me was how this person was able to bring out the drive inside of me and justified the importance of education, my roots and ME! I hope you enjoy this segment.
