Exploring Non Verbal Communication

I decided to watch "The Big Bang Theory", I often hear my daughters talk about it so I thought it may be interesting.

There are 5 characters in this show 4 males and one female.  There is one character that I noticed that  when he speaks the other characters seem to look annoyed. One rolls his eyes, another covers his face, the other two just have a blank stare and shook their heads. He did not even notice how the others look at him, he just continued to speak and smile or chuckle afterward. They all seem comfortable around each other until they are around women. They look scared to death and  they argued back and forth pointing and pushing one another.

They work together in the same place and spend a lot of time in a comic book store.
The characters seem to enjoy each others company and they eat a lot of what I think is Chinese take out, in the living room. In this episode the tall male character stands over another as to move out of my spot. He seems to be territorial  on top of being full of himself. There is a romance going on with two characters, she seems to be the one in control because she smiles and he just follows.

Watching the show over again, I noticed that I was right about one of the main characters Sheldon. He is extremely intelligent and he knows it. He is sarcastic with the others but the others just shrug it off with a comment or two. They show that they do care for each other  with sarcasm and derogatory remarks.

I was happy that I was able to understand the body language from this show, (and actually enjoyed it).

I realized when people speak, language is not only left to the emission of words. In order to get their point across a great deal of meaning is conveyed using gestures whether it is intended or not. Listening to people speak they become animated during their conversations. Non-verbal expression can be extremely emotional or powerful because of it's persuasive impact it has on others.

  1. I think this show is so funny. Thinking what it would be like to watch it without the sound interests me because I think the a lot of the jokes are make with straight faces. I like how you pointed out that they looked annoyed with Sheldon, they usually are. This was a great show to pick!

  2. The Big Bang Theory is my FAVORITE tv show! I love that you were able to use the non-verbal cues to draw a conclusion that Sheldon is a little bit cocky and territorial. He actually won't let anyone sit on HIS couch cushion in their apartment which cracks me up! I learned very quickly through this assignment how important it is to listen to the verbal cues and watch the non-verbal cues because without both, we may miss out on important information!
    Great post!
