In our diverse world effective communication is important. It is because of  many cultures communicating with others can be challenging. Communication is so much more than the spoken word. I do find myself communicating differently with people of different cultures because we are living in a global society in which  we need to be aware that not all forms of communication is simple and effective. There are many factors that can help or hinder communication in any culture. Understanding and accepting the differences can help open the lines of communication.

Communicating with children I remind myself that all cultures are equal. I know that the way I was raised is the culture that I am most comfortable with, but I know that it is not only way or the best way.

I stay clear of assuming that certain cultures all share the same beliefs, opinions or views. Everyone is treated and individuals.

Being sensitive of Non-verbal communication such as facial expressions, body language and voice is important due to the fact that all cultures have different interpretations of them.

  1. LOL! Your first picture sums it up well!
I have found that communicating with people from other cultures is more difficult than communicating with people of different ages, genders, race, religions, abilities, etc. If the culture is unknown and unfamiliar to me, I would be fearful of offending them.

  2. Hi Ivy. ‘Communication is so much more than the spoken word’ - - that is a fantastic quote you stated here and it surely is more than what others may see it as or how they use it. Some cultures take it offensively if you point directly to them, while others may not like to be stared at. I believe it stems down to how you approach others in a fashionable and professional way and how your behavior reflects your identity. Great post, Ivy… Jay

  3. I love reading your posts! They are always so insightful and the graphics are awesome! I agree that we must try to remember that even though we are comfortable with our beliefs and values, we must be careful not to assume that our way is the only way. I too am afraid of offending some people, especially those whose beliefs are so far opposite of my own. I am trying to work on my communication skills with these groups of people in an effort to follow the Platinum Rule. Thanks for sharing!
